Dial-Up Networking Configuration
for Windows 95/98

This page is to help OVIS users install the Dial-Up Networking features included in Windows 95 and 98 so they can use it to connect to OVIS's server. Although this might seem like a long process, take your time and follow the instructions closely. Depending on your configuration, Windows might prompt you for either the Windows CD or Windows Floppy Disks. Please have the appropriate media ready before starting following these instructions.

  1. Double-Click on the "My Computer" icon located on your desktop
  2. Open the Control Panel folder
  3. Double-Click on Network
  4. Click on Configuration. Under "The following network components are installed" you should see "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP"
    If "Dial-Up Adapter" is missing:
    a) Click Add
    b) Select Adapter
    c) Click on Add
    d) Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft
    e) Under Network Protocols, select Dial-Up Adapter
    f) Click OK
    If "TCP/IP" is missing:
    a) Click Add
    b) Select Protocol
    c) Click Add
    d) Under Manufacturers, select Microsoft
    e) Under Network Protocols, select TCP/IP
    f) Click OK
  5. Click OK and a window will appear telling you that you must restart your computer before the settings will take effect. Click Yes to restart your computer

Dial-Up Networking:

  1. Double-Click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop
  2. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder
    If you DO NOT see the Dial-Up Networking icon:
    a. Click on Start and choose Control Panel from the Settings menu
    b. Double-Click on "Add/Remove Programs"
    c. Click on Windows Setup
    d. Click on Communications
    e. Click on Details
    f. Make sure the box to the left of "Dial-Up Networking" is checked then click OK twice
    g. Go to the My Computer windows and open the Dial-Up Networking folder
  3. Double-Click on Make New Connection
  4. For "Name" type OVIS and click Next
  5. Leave the Area Code field blank if you are making a local call
  6. Under Telephone Number, type one of the following and click Next followed by Finish
    a. Moundsville – 843-4800
    b. Wheeling - 233-2326
    c. New Martinsviile - 455-2821
  7. Right Click on the OVIS icon and choose Properties
    a. Click the Server Type tab at the top of the window
    b. Under "Advanced options" make sure only "Enable Software Compression" is checked
    c. Under "Allowed network protocols" make sure only "TCP/IP" is checked
  8. Click the TCP/IP Settings box on the lower right
    a. Make sure "Server assigned IP address" is selected at the top
    b. Click "Specify name server addresses"
    c. For Primary DNS: type 205.244.15.2
    d. For Secondary DNS: type 63.239.131.2
  9. Close the open windows by click OK until you are back at the Dial-Up Networking window
    Right Click the OVIS icon and select Create Shortcut
  10. A window will pop up saying it cannot create a shortcut here, just select Yes and a shortcut will be placed on your desktop

 

Getting Connected:

  1. Make sure your modem is turned on (if external model) and connected to a phone line
  2. Double-Click on the OVIS icon
  3. Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields
  4. Click Connect and the modem should dial the specified number for OVIS
  5. After an OVIS modem answers your call you will see a window saying "Verifying user name and password". Shortly after, a box will appear acknowledging your connection to OVIS

    Now you are connected to the OVIS and the Internet and are ready to use any Winsock related application like Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Eudora.

Windows 95 and 98 come with a built in browsers called Internet Explorer. Normally this icon is on your Desktop called The Internet or Internet Explorer.  Double-Click this icon to start Internet Explorer. If a message box comes up instead of Internet Explorer just tell it you want to use your current settings.  Internet Explorer will then open without prompting you again. BTW, you can type http://www.ovis.net in the Address box in Explorer to go to OVIS's website.

Disconnecting:

  1. Double-Click the small icon on your lower right toolbar that looks like two computers.
  2. A window will pop open with a title "Connected to OVIS"
  3. Click the Disconnect button to log off and hang up from OVIS and the Internet.
