Dial-Up Networking Configuration
for Windows Millennium
This page is to help OVIS users install the Dial-Up Networking features included
in Windows Millennium so they can use it to connect to OVIS's server. Although this might
seem like a long process, take your time and follow the instructions closely. Depending on
your configuration, Windows might prompt you for the Windows CD. Please have
this available before starting following these
instructions.
Network Configuration
- Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-Click on the Network icon. You must have at least two items listed to connect to OVIS.
You need Dial-Up
Adapter and TCP/IP.
- If you are missing Dial-Up Adapter: Click on Add, select Adapter
and click on Add. Choose Microsoft on the left and Dial-Up
Adapter on the right. Click OK
- If you are missing TCP/IP: Click on Add, select Protocol
and click on Add. Choose Microsoft on the left, and TCP/IP
on the right. Click OK
OVIS Connection Icon
- Click Start, then Settings, then Dial-Up Networking.
If you are not prompted to create your connection, double-click on Make New
Connection.
- When asked to enter a name for the connection, enter Ohio
Valley Internet Service or OVIS. Make sure the modem listed is correct
and click Next.
- Enter the phone number for the OVIS dialup in your area.

- Click Next then Finish
- Click the new OVIS icon, one time, with the right mouse button and select
Properties from the menu.
- Click on the Networking tab
- Type of Dial-Up Server should be: PPP: Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME
- Advanced options: Enable Software Compression should be checked. Nothing else in this section should be checked
- Allowed Network Protocols: TCP/IP should be checked. Nothing else in this section should be checked
- Click the TCP/IP Settings box
- Server Assigned IP Address should be selected.

Specify Name Server Addresses should be selected.
Under Primary DNS enter 205.244.15.2
Under Secondary DNS enter 63.239.131.2
- Both Primary WINS and Secondary WINS should be 0.0.0.0
- Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway should be checked
- Click on Ok, then OK again to get back to the Dialup Networking window.
- Right click the OVIS icon, one time, and select Create Shortcut from the
menu.
- Click Yes to the question regarding placing the icon on the desktop.
Getting Connected
- Make sure your modem is turned on (if external model) and connected to a
phone line.
- Double-Click on the OVIS icon.
- Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.
- Click Connect and the modem should dial the specified number for OVIS.
- After an OVIS modem answers your call you will see a window saying
"Verifying user name and password". Shortly after, a box will appear
acknowledging your connection to OVIS
Now you are connected to OVIS and the Internet and are ready to use any
Internet
related application like Internet Explorer, Netscape, Eudora, etc.
Windows Millenium comes with a built in browsers called Internet Explorer. Normally this
icon is on your Desktop called The Internet or Internet Explorer. Double-Click this
icon to start Internet Explorer. If a message box comes up instead of Internet Explorer
just tell it you want to use your current settings. Internet Explorer will then open
without prompting you again. BTW, you can type http://www.ovis.net in the Address box in
Explorer to go to OVIS's website.
Disconnecting:
- Double-Click the small icon on your lower right toolbar that looks like two computers.
- A window will pop open with a title Connected to OVIS
- Click the Disconnect button to log off and hang up from OVIS and the
Internet.
