The John Marshall Girls Basketball team finished it's season with a 13-9 record,
going out with a bang, as they held their own against third ranked Wheeling Park
in a too-close-for-comfort final Sectional game.I think I can speak for all the parents
when I say we are really proud of all of them,
of how they handled themselves on the court in many difficult situations, and of
how they dealt with victory and defeat, sometimes hard lessons necessary to life.
The 1997-98 Girls Basketball season came to it's finish Saturday, March 14th
in Charleston Civic Center at the State Girls Basketball Championship Games.
The Wheeling Central Catholic Lady Maroon Knights vied for the single A title
against the Crusaderettes from Parkersburg Catholic. A couple of 4th period
calls that could have easily have gone the other way, gave the Crusaderettes the
boost they needed to edge out the Knights in a 55-51 decision. Compliments to
the Lady Maroon Knights for showing us a great season!
In the AAA playoff Finals the Lady Polar Bears were stunned by the antics of the
Park Ladies, caught off balance and never quite recovering. It might have been
a good idea to watch Park play a couple of times just to get an idea of what you're
up against.
I was at the office watching the game LIVE on channel 7 and the name that kept
surfacing was Toni Matkovich, over and over. Toni was determined from the start
that she was going to have a good game, come what may! And she did too, 32
points! Good job, Toni. Ketara Lee make stealing and rebounding seem like an
afternoon stroll in the park. You go, girl! We'll get another chance at you
two next
year! ;)
All in all, it's been a great season for me as a parent of a JM Basketball player.
I
have enjoyed every game, even the ones we lost, and am looking forward to the
1998-99 season with anticipation!
